Labubu - are you in or out?!?

Labubu – all I have to say is "what the hell???".

Seen adorning iconic Birkin bags and on the arms of many celebs such as Rihanna, Dua Lipa and Blackpink’s Lisa, this little fury doll is THE bag charm of the moment (why, though, WHY?!?).

Created in 2015 by Hong Kong born artist Kasing Lung, the characters were inspired by Nordic fairy tales and first made an appearance in children’s books. With sharp fangs and pointy ears, Labubu’s personality is described as energetic and mischievous, or as I see it – creepy as hell... 👹

In 2019 Lung partnered with Chinese toy company Pop Mart, already widely known for its collectable toys and blind boxes. Since then, Labubu has been released in various colours, shapes and sizes. Some collections include the Happy Halloween Party, Lazy Yoga, and the Singapore-exclusive Hide and Seek series.

Initially popular in Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and of course South Korea, this trend has been on the rise since the middle of 2024 and has seen a sudden explosion in popularity with the recent release of the toys in a collection called “Monsters into Big Energy Series” selling out worldwide within a week of its’ release (according to Vogue Business).

So, what is it that makes grown women go gaga for a plush toy bag charm?!

Send me your guesses please, I’m interested to know if I’m the only one completely baffled by this trend!

Oh, and if you’re desperately seeking one, The Business of Preloved Fashion are giving away a Labubu with every bag purchase at the moment, they are also currently on sale at Galleries Lafayette until stocks last AND apparently you can get a free Labubu with your burger meal at Beau restaurant in Jumeriah. You’re welcome 😉!
